How to get cited in Google AI Mode and AI Overviews: Google says there is no special optimisation, it is still SEO

By Saj Ali, founder and editor · Last updated 31 Oct 2026

To get cited in Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, your page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and your site must be included in the Search generative AI control in Search Console. After that, Google says there is no special trick: it is “still SEO”, and unique, non-commodity content matters most. What changed on 15 October 2026 is how much a citation is worth: Google now shows inline links more often and higher up in AI answers (Google).

This guide sets out what Google has actually said, a step-by-step checklist, what you can ignore and how to measure results. Every claim links to Google’s own pages or named coverage.

Key takeaways

  • Google says there are “no additional requirements” to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: be indexed and snippet-eligible.
  • Since 31 August 2026, every site has a Search generative AI control in Search Console. Include is the default; Exclude removes you within about 1–2 days.
  • On 15 October 2026 Google said it made “substantial increases” to inline links and is showing them higher in responses more often. It gave no figures.
  • Google is testing a section at the top of some answers for one or two official sites, and Preferred Sources use has grown more than 7x since January (Google’s figure).
  • Google says to ignore llms.txt, “chunking” and AI-only rewrites for its search. Separate pages for every fan-out query can breach its scaled content abuse policy.
  • The Generative AI performance report shows impressions only, by page, country, date and device.

What changed in AI Mode and AI Overviews on 15 October 2026?

Google announced five updates to how links appear in its AI search features (Google, 15 Oct 2026):

Update What Google said Status
More inline links, shown higher “Continued and substantial increases to the presence of inline links”, and “updates to show inline links higher up in responses more frequently” Launching
Official-site section A dedicated section at the top of a response for the “one or two official places” to complete a task, with context about why each link is useful Testing
Timely article carousels Carousels for timely articles, which highlight a user’s Preferred Sources, expand to more locations and languages Starting to roll out
Related-article links Links at the end of responses get image thumbnails and a more clickable design (as reported by Search Engine Journal) Launching
Creator names in AI Mode Clickable creator and publisher names on video results link to their Search profiles Testing

Google also said the number of people using Preferred Sources “has grown by more than 7x since the start of the year”. Search Engine Journal noted that the post gives neither the size of the inline-link increase nor a user count for Preferred Sources (SEJ).

The audience is large: in June 2026 Google said AI Overviews have more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode more than one billion monthly users (Google).

How does Google choose which pages to cite?

Google describes two techniques (Google Search Central):

  • Retrieval-augmented generation (grounding). Google’s core ranking systems retrieve relevant pages from the Search index, and the AI response is generated from them, “showing prominent, clickable links to relevant web pages that support the information in the response”.
  • Query fan-out. The model runs a set of related searches. Google’s example: for “how to fix a lawn that’s full of weeds”, fan-out queries might include “best herbicides for lawns”, “remove weeds without chemicals” and “how to prevent weeds in lawn”.

Two practical points follow. First, a page can be cited for a fan-out query it ranks for, even if it doesn’t rank for the user’s original query. Second, Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews “may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary”, and AI Overviews “often don’t trigger” (Google).

How to get cited in Google AI Mode: a step-by-step checklist

  1. Check the Search generative AI control. In Search Console, go to Settings > Search generative AI. “Include” is the default for all properties; “Exclude” stops your links and content appearing in AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover; “Inherit” follows a parent property. Exclusion takes effect within 1–2 days, though some content may take longer (Search Console Help). Google says the control is not used as a ranking signal for the rest of Search (Google).
  2. Make sure key pages are indexed and snippet-eligible. That is the only technical requirement (Google). Check that you are not limiting snippets by accident with nosnippet, data-nosnippet or a very low max-snippet, which Google lists as the controls for limiting what it shows.
  3. Allow crawling everywhere. Google’s list starts with allowing crawling in robots.txt “and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure”. Bot-blocking at the CDN is a common, silent cause of missing pages.
  4. Write non-commodity content. Google says content people find “unique, compelling, and useful” will “likely influence your website’s presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions” in its guide. Its example contrasts “7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers” with a first-hand piece on why a buyer waived an inspection (Google).
  5. Answer the follow-up questions on the same page. Fan-out rewards pages that cover related sub-questions. But Google warns that creating separate content for every variation or fan-out query, mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses, “violates Google’s scaled content abuse spam policy”.
  6. Organise pages for people. Clear paragraphs, sections and headings. Google says there is no ideal page length and no need to break content into tiny chunks.
  7. Add high-quality images and video. AI features can show images and video, so these create more ways to appear.
  8. Keep structured data honest. Google says structured data isn’t required, but it should match the visible text on the page.
  9. Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile up to date if you sell products or have a local business. AI responses can include product listings and local business details.
  10. Ask readers to make you a Preferred Source. In AI Mode and AI Overviews, content from a user’s preferred sources can carry a “preferred” badge. Your site must be included in the Search generative AI control, and only domains and subdomains are eligible, not subfolders (Google).
  11. Claim a Search profile if you are a creator. AI Mode is testing creator names that link to Search profiles. Google’s help page requires at least 10,000 followers on YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok and an age of 18 or over, and SEJ reported availability in the US, Canada and India on 15 October (Google Search Help, SEJ).
  12. Measure, then improve. Use the Generative AI performance report (below) to see which pages are shown.

How do you add the Preferred Sources button?

Google’s documentation gives a two-line embed. Add the library, preferably in the <head>:

<script async src="https://news.google.com/swg/js/v1/publisher.js"></script>

Then place this where the button should appear:

<div google-add-preferred-source-btn></div>

If your CMS can’t run the script, Google offers a deep link you can use in pages, newsletters and social posts: https://www.google.com/preferences/source?q=example.com, replacing example.com with your domain (Google).

What can you ignore?

Google lists these as unnecessary for its search (Google Search Central):

Common “GEO hack” Google’s position
llms.txt or other AI text files Google Search ignores them. They neither help nor harm.
Special schema for AI “There’s no special schema.org markup you need to add.”
“Chunking” content into tiny pieces Not required; Google can understand multiple topics on one page.
Rewriting content just for AI Not needed; AI systems understand synonyms and meaning.
Seeking inauthentic mentions “Isn’t as helpful as it might seem.”
Third-party tools claiming “internal” Google metrics “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.”

This applies to Google only. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude use their own systems, which is why AI visibility trackers measure them separately. Compare options in our guide to AI visibility optimisation tools or read how AI search trackers work.

How do you measure citations in AI Overviews and AI Mode?

  • Generative AI performance report. Rolled out to all websites on 31 August 2026. It shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by pages, countries, dates and devices, with web text and multimodal filters (Search Console Help). The help page lists impressions as the metric; it does not describe a clicks metric.
  • The main Performance report. Traffic from AI features is included in the overall “Web” search type (Google).
  • Position data. Search Console gives all links in an AI Overview the overview’s single position, so an inline link moving higher does not change its reported position on its own (SEJ).
  • Analytics. Google suggests tracking conversions and time on site. It says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are “higher quality”, meaning users tend to spend more time on the site. That is Google’s claim and it publishes no data with it.

Can you stop Google using your content in AI answers?

Goal Control
Keep links and content out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features Search generative AI control set to Exclude (Search Console Help)
Limit what text is shown from a page nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet (Google)
Remove a page from Search entirely noindex
Limit AI training of the models behind these features Google-Extended; the Search control “doesn’t affect AI training” (Search Console Help)

Excluding has a cost: Google says excluded sites get no traffic or impressions from these features, and content from other sites “may appear similar to yours” (Search Console Help).

What is still unknown?

  • Google has not said how much the inline-link increase is, or which queries get it.
  • The official-site section and AI Mode creator links are tests, with no eligibility rules or expansion dates (SEJ).
  • Search Console reports impressions in AI features but not a separate click-through rate for them.

FAQs

How do I get cited in Google AI Mode? Make sure the page is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, keep your site included in the Search generative AI control in Search Console, allow crawling, and publish unique, non-commodity content that answers the main question and its likely follow-ups. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations.

What are inline links in AI Overviews? Inline links are links embedded in words or phrases inside an AI response. On 15 October 2026 Google said it had made substantial increases to inline links in AI Mode and AI Overviews and is showing them higher up in responses more frequently.

Do I need llms.txt to appear in AI Overviews? No. Google says Google Search ignores llms.txt and similar files, and that you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

How do I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console? Use the Generative AI performance report, which shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device. Clicks from AI features are included in the main Performance report under the Web search type.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews without leaving Google Search? Yes. Set the Search generative AI control in Search Console to Exclude. Google says content is excluded within 1 to 2 days, the control is not a ranking signal for the rest of Search, and excluded sites get no traffic or impressions from AI features.

What are Preferred Sources in AI Mode? Preferred Sources lets users choose websites they want to see more of. In AI Mode and AI Overviews, content from those sites can carry a preferred badge. Your site must be included in the Search generative AI control, and only domains and subdomains are eligible.

Does structured data help with AI Overviews? Google says structured data is not required and there is no special schema for AI features, but it should match the visible text and remains useful for rich results.
