ChatGPT Ads for Digital Marketers: Costs, Setup and What Early Advertisers Found (2026 Guide)

October 24, 2026 · 6 min read

On 21 October 2026, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads to 26 more countries, bringing it to 89 markets. It says more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since ads launched about eight months ago (PPC Land, 21 Oct 2026). For most agencies and in-house teams, it is now a channel you can actually buy.

This guide to ChatGPT Ads for digital marketers covers how the ads work, what they cost, how to set up your first campaign, and what early advertisers found. Every rule below comes from OpenAI’s own Help Center, checked on 24 October 2026. Performance figures come from named advertisers, because OpenAI hasn’t published benchmarks yet.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT Ads now run in 89 markets, and more than 100,000 advertisers have used them (PPC Land, 21 Oct 2026).
  • The minimum daily budget is $25 (or €15 / £15). OpenAI suggests a $3 to $5 starting CPC bid.
  • You target with context hints, not keywords, and you never pay per conversion.
  • Early advertisers paid $4.41 to $9.89 a click on average. Treat it as a test channel for now.

How ChatGPT Ads for digital marketers work

  • Where they appear: below ChatGPT’s answers. Each ad shows your brand name, favicon, a title, copy, an image and a landing page (OpenAI Help: the basics).
  • Who sees them: only users on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI does not show ads on Plus, Pro or any Business plan, and it doesn’t show them to accounts it identifies as under 18 (OpenAI Help; PPC Land).
  • How ads are chosen: by “expected relevance and outcomes”. The signals include the conversation’s context, your landing page and copy, and context hints you add to each ad group. Context hints describe topics or conversations you want to appear in. They are not exact-match keywords and don’t guarantee delivery (OpenAI Help).
  • The auction: a relevance-weighted, second-price auction (OpenAI Help).
  • What you see: aggregated results. OpenAI says advertisers get aggregated insights rather than access to individual conversations (OpenAI, 5 May 2026).

That last point matters for ChatGPT Ads for digital marketing teams used to keyword reports. There’s no search-term report to mine. You steer with context hints and landing pages, and you judge success by conversions.

What do ChatGPT Ads cost?

Budget is the first question most teams ask about ChatGPT Ads for digital marketers, so here are OpenAI’s rules first, then what real advertisers paid.

The rules (from OpenAI)

Setting What OpenAI says
Campaign objectives Views (CPM), Clicks (CPC) or Conversions. You can’t change the objective later
Conversion billing Billed per valid click (oCPC) or per 1,000 impressions (oCPM). Never per conversion
Suggested CPC starting bid A maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click
Minimum daily budget $25 USD, €15 or £15. It varies by currency
Daily budget pacing An average over a Sunday-to-Saturday week. One day can spend up to 2x the daily budget, and a week can’t go over 7x
Spend reporting Spend can lag 7 to 8 hours, so zero spend on screen doesn’t mean zero charges

What early advertisers actually paid

Search Engine Journal pulled together public results on 8 September 2026 (SEJ):

Advertiser (as reported) Spend Avg CPC CPM CTR
Common Thread Collective $9,620 $4.41 n/a 0.94%
Floyd Blaikie ~$7,000 CAD $9.29 $64.34 0.7%
Synter $4,428.84 $9.89 n/a n/a
Hostinger ~$70,000 n/a Above $65 n/a

Two findings stand out:

  • Cost varies widely by country. Synter paid $5.10 per click in the UK, $10.62 in the US, $17.59 in Australia and $22.89 in New Zealand. The last two had lower volume.
  • Clicks don’t always mean the right buyers. When Floyd Blaikie identified the organisations behind 336 paid clicks, only 5 of 146 matched the ideal customer profile.

On the positive side, Common Thread Collective estimated attributed revenue of $19,000 to $38,000 on its $9,620 spend, which it put at a 3.3x to 6.8x ROAS. These are four advertisers, not a benchmark, so treat ChatGPT Ads for digital marketers as a test channel for now. Your results will depend on your offer and your landing page.

Where can you run ChatGPT Ads?

Self-serve Ads Manager is available in the countries listed in OpenAI’s availability article. On 24 October 2026 that included the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, most of the EU, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Mexico and others. The advertiser being billed must be based in a listed country.

Two catches for ChatGPT Ads for digital marketers running international campaigns (creating campaigns):

  • New self-serve accounts may be limited to their home country until identity verification is approved and they reach the required spend.
  • Include countries explicitly. Excluding countries doesn’t limit delivery to the ones you want.

You can also buy through partners. OpenAI names agency partners Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP, and technology partners Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue and StackAdapt (OpenAI).

How to set up ChatGPT Ads for digital marketing: your first campaign

Setting up ChatGPT Ads for digital marketers takes ten steps. These follow OpenAI’s campaign setup guide.

  1. Sign up at ads.openai.com and complete account verification and billing.
  2. Name the campaign clearly, so reports are easy to read later.
  3. Pick the objective. Choose Clicks if you’re testing, or Conversions once tracking works. You can’t change it later.
  4. Set up conversion tracking first. OpenAI supports a pixel and a Conversions API (OpenAI). Add UTM parameters to your landing page URLs too. They carry through on clicks (the basics).
  5. Choose a daily budget. OpenAI recommends daily budgets for new advertisers. A change from a campaign-total budget to a daily one can’t be reversed.
  6. Set dates after you create the campaign. Date fields may only appear when you edit it. Don’t publish just to reach them, or ads could start early.
  7. Add countries and, optionally, platforms: Android app, Android web, desktop web, iOS app or iOS web.
  8. Custom audiences (optional) need at least 25,000 matched users to include. Avoid them if you’re targeting the EEA or Switzerland.
  9. Write context hints for each ad group that describe the conversations your buyers have, for example “comparing project management tools for small agencies”.
  10. Check before launch. Make sure billing is done, the ads have passed review and show as “Serving”, and the dates include today.

Retailers: you can build ads from a product feed (CSV or TXT upload, a hosted URL or SFTP). OpenAI says feed ads “have been among the strongest-performing ads in our program to date”. Feed items expire after two weeks, so automate the upload (OpenAI Help: product feeds).

6 tips on ChatGPT Ads for digital marketing teams

  1. Start at the suggested $3 to $5 CPC and watch for a week before you raise bids. Remember that spend data lags.
  2. Write context hints like questions people ask ChatGPT, not like keyword lists. Hints guide delivery, but they don’t control it.
  3. Make the landing page answer the question. The landing page is one of the signals OpenAI uses to pick ads.
  4. Judge on conversions, not clicks. The 5-of-146 ICP result shows clicks can come from the wrong companies, especially in B2B.
  5. Test the UK early if you sell there. It was the cheapest market in Synter’s test at $5.10 a click.
  6. Expect “paid” visits that aren’t billed. OpenAI’s review crawlers visit landing pages with your tracking parameters, so your analytics may count them as paid traffic (the basics).

Who should try ChatGPT Ads for digital marketers, and who should wait

Try it now if: you sell to consumers or small businesses who research in ChatGPT, you have conversion tracking in place, and you can test at $25 or more a day for a few weeks. Retailers with product feeds have the strongest signal from OpenAI so far.

Wait if: you’re B2B with a narrow ideal customer profile, you can’t track conversions, or you need keyword-level control. OpenAI says there are no cross-advertiser benchmarks yet (OpenAI Help: FAQ).
