Key features

  • Content Lake: a hosted, real-time content database that stores content as structured JSON, queried with GROQ or GraphQL, with references kept intact across documents.
  • Sanity Studio: an open-source editor built with React that your team configures in code, with real-time collaboration, revision history and free hosting.
  • Visual Editing and page building: live preview, click-to-edit previews and a Presentation tool, so marketers can edit pages and landing pages in context.
  • Releases and localisation: scheduled drafts (Growth), Content Releases that publish bundles of changes together (Enterprise add-on), and unlimited locales on every plan.
  • AI Assist (Growth plan and up): reusable instructions inside the Studio for translation, SEO fields, image captions, related-article suggestions, long-form drafts, variants and image generation, with style guides and role-based guardrails.
  • Content Agent: an AI agent you talk to in the Studio, Slack or by API to audit content, find missing fields, bulk-edit hundreds of documents, turn press releases into articles and research topics on the web; changes are staged for your review.
  • Agent Actions and Functions: schema-aware APIs to generate, transform and translate content automatically, triggered by content changes, scripts or CI pipelines.
  • Canvas, MCP server and Sanity Context: an AI writing surface that maps drafts to your fields, an MCP server for tools such as Claude and Cursor, and an MCP endpoint that lets your own AI agents query your content.

How marketers use Sanity

  • Websites and landing pages: developers build reusable page sections once, and marketers assemble and preview pages with Visual Editing and the Presentation tool.
  • Campaigns: scheduled drafts on Growth, and Content Releases on Enterprise, let you prepare a launch across many pages and publish it together.
  • Localisation: unlimited locales on every plan, with AI Assist and Agent Actions translating whole documents or single fields while keeping the structure.
  • SEO housekeeping: AI Assist can write meta descriptions and image captions, and Content Agent can find every post missing a meta description and draft one for review.
  • AI agents and search: Sanity Context and the MCP server let chatbots and AI agents answer from your live, approved content.

AI features, credits and limits

Sanity’s AI comes in layers. AI Assist is a Studio plugin on the Growth plan and above; editors run shared instructions on a whole document or one field, and can undo changes. Sanity’s AI Assist docs note that very long instructions or large schemas can exhaust the model’s context, and that long jobs may time out.

Content Agent and Agent Actions are included on every plan but use AI credits. Free and Growth include 1,000 credits a month, Enterprise 5,000. According to Sanity’s AI credits guide, each message to Content Agent costs 4 credits and each action 2; translating a document costs about 12 credits per language. Extra credits on Growth cost $0.05 each, credits do not roll over, and admins can set a monthly spending limit that pauses AI features when reached.

Sanity’s terms say AI outputs may be inaccurate and must be checked by people before use, which matches how Content Agent stages bulk edits for review.

What we liked

  • Very flexible structured content that can power a website, app, landing pages and AI agents from one source
  • AI features work with your content model, and Content Agent stages bulk changes for review
  • A free plan for up to 20 seats, and a detailed public usage and pricing table
  • Strong public evidence: 963 G2 reviews averaging 4.7 out of 5, and an active open-source project
  • Clear security documentation, a public DPA and a named list of AI sub-processors

Things to know before you buy

  • A developer is needed to model content and connect your front end before marketers can publish
  • Growth is charged per seat, so costs rise with every editor; AI Assist is not on the free plan
  • AI usage is metered in credits beyond the monthly allowance, so set a spending limit
  • SSO, custom roles, audit logs and an uptime SLA are on Enterprise, which is quote-based
  • Self-serve plans are billed monthly only, by card

Security, privacy and data

Sanity’s security page says it is SOC 2 Type 2 certified and GDPR-compliant, and its pricing page lists SOC 2, GDPR, CCPA and PCI DSS on every plan. It hosts on Google Cloud; the security page says uploaded content is stored in the EU/EEA, the US or other regions where Sanity operates, and that its backend currently runs in three data centres in Belgium. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and databases can be restored to any point in the past 30 days.

A public Data Processing Addendum and sub-processor list are available. The list names Google Cloud (including Gemini), OpenAI and Anthropic as AI providers for Content Agent and the editorial tools. Sanity’s AI terms say all its AI provider integrations are configured so that input data is not used to train models. SSO with SAML, custom access control and audit logs are Enterprise features.

What users say

On G2, Sanity is rated 4.7 out of 5 from 963 reviews (checked 5 Nov 2026). Reviewers most often praise its flexibility, developer experience and free tier; the most common criticisms are the learning curve for non-technical users and per-seat pricing on the Growth plan. The open-source Sanity Studio repository on GitHub has 6,381 stars.

Who it is for

Good fit: Marketing and content teams with developer support that run several sites, brands, markets or channels and want structured content plus AI for translation, SEO fields and bulk updates.

Less suited to: Small teams with no developer who want a ready-made website builder, or teams that need SSO and audit logs without an Enterprise contract.

How to run a fair trial

  • Start on the free plan and ask a developer to model one real page type, such as a landing page or blog post.
  • Invite two or three marketers and time how long it takes them to edit, preview and publish a page.
  • Start a Growth trial to test AI Assist on your real fields: translation, meta descriptions and image alt text.
  • Set an AI spending limit before you try Content Agent on bulk edits, and check the credit usage it reports.
  • Count the seats you will really need, and price Growth against an Enterprise quote if you need SSO.

Some links on Digital Marketing Supermarket are affiliate links, and some listings and spotlights are sponsored. We may earn a commission or a fee from these at no extra cost to you. Sponsored placements are always labelled, and payment never decides a review score. We use AI tools to help with research and drafting, and an editor checks and edits everything before it’s published.
