ChatGPT ads CPC benchmarks October 2026: published advertiser costs compared with Google Ads and Meta (Digital Marketing Supermarket)

By Saj Ali · Last updated 31 Oct 2026

There is no official ChatGPT ads CPC benchmark. OpenAI recommends starting Clicks campaigns at a $3–$5 maximum bid, but says it doesn’t yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, and published tests show average CPCs from about $3 to above $22 depending on the market and the advertiser (OpenAI Help Center; Search Engine Journal).

For context, WordStream’s 2026 benchmarks put the average Google Ads search CPC at $5.42 (WordStream), and LocaliQ puts the average Facebook traffic-campaign CPC at $0.60 (LocaliQ). This page collects every public ChatGPT ads cost figure we could verify as of 31 October 2026, explains why they vary, and gives you a simple test to decide whether the channel is worth a budget. If you’re new to the format, start with our ChatGPT ads guide for digital marketers, which covers set-up.

Key takeaways

  • OpenAI’s $3–$5 figure is a recommended starting bid, not an average CPC. OpenAI says it has no cross-advertiser benchmarks yet.
  • Published tests: about $3 (B2B, Tug), $4.41 (ecommerce, Common Thread Collective), $9.29 (B2B), $9.89 (Synter, from $5.10 in the UK to $22.89 in New Zealand).
  • Similarweb’s panel puts all-time ChatGPT ad CTR at 0.74% in the UK and 0.73% in the US, well below WordStream’s 6.64% average for Google search ads.
  • The only published CPA comparison is a single vendor-supplied result: Weight Watchers’ attributed CPA ran 15.3% below its benchmark, with no spend or volumes given.
  • Treat ChatGPT ads as a research-stage, consideration channel for now, and judge them on downstream quality, not CPC.
  • Run a capped test with UTMs and the OpenAI Pixel, and set your own success line before you spend.

Is there an official ChatGPT ads CPC benchmark?

No. OpenAI’s help centre says: “For CPC campaigns, we recommend starting with a maximum bid of $3–$5 USD per click.” Ads Manager may add bid-strength guidance. Ads are sold through “a relevance-weighted, second-price auction”, so what you pay depends on competition and relevance, not just your bid (OpenAI Help Center).

Search Engine Journal’s Brooke Osmundson warns that repetition is turning that recommended bid into a supposed “benchmark”, “even though OpenAI has published no such benchmark”. She notes OpenAI says it doesn’t yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types, and that there’s no Auction Insights, Impression Share or competitive reporting (Search Engine Journal, 8 Sep 2026).

Other platform facts that shape cost (OpenAI Help Center; OpenAI daily budgets):

  • You can buy on Views (CPM), Clicks (CPC) or Conversions. Conversion-optimised campaigns with click billing (oCPC) still charge per valid click.
  • The standard US minimum daily budget is $25. A daily budget is an average over a Sunday-to-Saturday week, and a single day can spend up to twice the daily budget.
  • Ads only show to Free and Go users. Plus, Pro and Business plans, and accounts identified as under 18, don’t see ads.
  • Context hints guide matching, but OpenAI says they “are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery”.

What CPCs are advertisers reporting?

Advertiser / test Type Spend Average CPC Other metrics Source
Tug (ATS/recruitment and behavioural health EHR clients) B2B Not given About $3 CPM about $13; CTR about 1.5% LBB
Common Thread Collective (high-AOV ecommerce client) Ecommerce $9,620 $4.41 0.94% CTR; estimated ROAS 3.3x–6.8x depending on attribution model SEJ
Floyd Blaikie’s team B2B About C$7,000 $9.29 $64.34 CPM; 0.7% CTR; 5 of 146 identified organisations matched the ICP SEJ
Synter Multi-market $4,428.84 $9.89 overall UK $5.10; US $10.62; Australia $17.59; New Zealand $22.89 (low volume in the last two) SEJ
Hostinger Web hosting Nearly $70,000 Not given CPMs above $65; CTR the bigger concern; specific use cases beat broad messaging SEJ

Advertiser- and agency-reported figures, not audited. Currencies as reported. Checked 31 Oct 2026.

Read this table as a range, not an average. Each line is one account, at one time, with its own targeting and creative. Hostinger’s head of PPC, Hüseyin Ograk, initially reported CPCs no higher than Google Search, but his view “became more nuanced as spend increased”, SEJ reports (Search Engine Journal).

Notice the UK figure in Synter’s test: $5.10 against $10.62 in the US. It’s one test, but it suggests UK auctions may be less crowded for now. Similarweb’s panel also shows UK reach slightly ahead of the US (below).

What CTR do ChatGPT ads get, by country?

Similarweb and the agency Graphite published “The State of ChatGPT Ads” on 28 September 2026. PPC Land reported its market figures (PPC Land):

Market Ad-eligible users reached, Sep 2026 All-time CTR, 30 Mar–16 Sep 2026
United Kingdom 45.7% 0.74%
United States 43.4% 0.73%
Australia 43.3% 0.67%
Canada 42.9% 0.75%
New Zealand 40.9% 0.60%
Japan 35.9% 1.53%
Brazil 34.9% 1.91%
South Korea 32.9% 1.21%
Mexico 27.8% 1.55%

Other findings from the same report:

  • Worldwide weekly CTR rose 112% from 30 March. PPC Land notes the US pilot began on 9 February, so the rise covers late March onwards.
  • CTR was about 48% higher in the first four turns of a chat. 28% of impressions fell in turn 1, and 51% in turns 1 to 3.
  • B2B SaaS took the largest share of US impressions (19.9%), led by Monday.com.
  • The deck “discloses percentages and shares only”, carries no cost, conversion or incrementality data, and both firms sell related services.

Tug’s B2B tests reported a higher CTR of about 1.5%, “two to three times what we typically see on tightly targeted LinkedIn campaigns” (LBB). Panel averages and a single agency’s campaigns measure different things, so don’t blend them.

How do ChatGPT ads compare with Google and Meta?

Metric ChatGPT ads (published tests) Google Ads search (WordStream 2026) Facebook traffic campaigns (LocaliQ)
Average CPC About $3 to $22.89; OpenAI recommends a $3–$5 starting bid $5.42 $0.60
Average CTR 0.73% (US) and 0.74% (UK) panel averages; about 1.5% in Tug’s B2B tests 6.64% 1.93%
Conversion rate No public cross-advertiser figure 8.18% 8.54% (lead campaigns)
Cost per lead No public cross-advertiser figure $66.69 $27.39 (lead campaigns)
Data basis Single accounts and one panel 13,000+ search campaigns, 23 industries, Apr 2025–Mar 2026 LocaliQ client campaigns

Sources: OpenAI, SEJ, LBB, Similarweb via PPC Land, WordStream, LocaliQ. Each uses its own methodology, so compare with care.

WordStream says its figures come from “over 13,000 search advertising campaigns across 23 industries running between April 2025 and March 2026”, across Google Ads and Microsoft Ads. Its average CPC of $5.42 is more than twice the $2.32 it recorded in 2016 (WordStream). LocaliQ reports a $0.60 Facebook traffic CPC (down from $0.70) and a 1.93% CTR (up from 1.71%) (LocaliQ).

The headline: ChatGPT ad CPCs from published tests sit in the same range as, or above, Google search, while click-through rates sit well below search. That’s expected. Search ads answer a typed query, while ChatGPT ads sit under an answer the user may already be satisfied with. What about conversions and CPA?

Public data is thin. The one named CPA comparison comes from DoubleVerify, which said on 5 October 2026 that its DV Rockerbox attribution tool now covers ChatGPT ads. Weight Watchers’ attributed cost per acquisition from ChatGPT “landed 15.3% below Weight Watchers’ established benchmark”. Jake Dmochowski, its vice president of growth, called it “an encouraging early signal” (PPC Land).

PPC Land points out that this is a single-advertiser result supplied by the vendor, “without spend, dates or conversion counts”. It also notes that a pixel and Conversions API only arrived with self-serve Ads Manager on 5 May 2026, and that one-day view-through conversions have been reported since 19 August (PPC Land).

On lead quality, the evidence points both ways. Tug saw visitors from ChatGPT ads spend 25–35% more time on site than paid search visitors, but concluded the ads “shouldn’t be treated as a direct-response lead generator” yet (LBB). Floyd Blaikie’s team found only 5 of 146 identifiable organisations matched its ideal customer profile (SEJ). PPC practitioner Melissa Mackey told PPC Land: “We ended up pausing our ChatGPT ads test due to poor lead quality” (PPC Land).

Why do CPCs vary so much?

  • No keywords. Context hints describe topics, so two advertisers with the same bid can match very different conversations (OpenAI).
  • Hidden auction. With no auction insights, you can’t separate competition from relevance or inventory when CPC moves (SEJ).
  • Country. Synter’s CPC ran from $5.10 in the UK to $22.89 in New Zealand (SEJ).
  • Where in the chat. Ads early in a conversation get more clicks, which affects how efficient a bid is (PPC Land).
  • Automated bidding. SEJ reports that in August OpenAI made Maximize results the default bid strategy for eligible new ad groups, with no guaranteed CPA, CPC or ROAS. You need to opt back into manual bidding for a hard cap (SEJ).
  • Creative. From 30 October 2026 OpenAI can rewrite headlines and descriptions by default unless you opt out (PPC Land). Check that setting before you compare CPCs across ad versions.

Are ChatGPT ads worth it? A five-question test

Answer these five questions before you budget. If you answer “yes” to at least three, a test makes sense.

  1. Do buyers research you in long conversations? Comparisons, “best tool for” questions and complex purchases fit. Impulse buys and emergency searches fit Google better.
  2. Can you sell online right away? PPC Land notes the deck’s top ten advertisers each sell “something a user can immediately purchase online”.
  3. Can you measure beyond the click? You need the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API, UTMs and a CRM to judge lead quality.
  4. Is your Google CPC already above $5? If so, a $3–$5 starting bid may look attractive. If you pay under $1 on search, expect ChatGPT to look expensive.
  5. Can you afford to learn? Budget for at least a few weeks at the $25-a-day US minimum (or the local equivalent), knowing the first weeks may not convert.

B2B SaaS, software and high-consideration ecommerce look like the best fits on current evidence. Our guide to why SaaS brands struggle with paid ads covers the wider funnel, and our list of AI tools for B2B marketers has measurement tools.

How to run a fair test

  1. Write your success line first. For example, “cost per qualified lead within 20% of Google search after four weeks”.
  2. Tag every URL. Add UTMs to every landing page URL. OpenAI says static tracking parameters persist on ad clicks (OpenAI). Check they survive if creative enhancements change your URL.
  3. Install the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API, and set up conversion events before launch.
  4. Start with a manual CPC bid of $3–$5 so you can see what the auction does.
  5. Write question-led context hints. Tug found question-based prompts beat scenario-based ones by more than 4x on CTR and 3x on site engagement (LBB).
  6. Measure quality outside Ads Manager. Track engaged sessions, lead-to-opportunity rate and revenue in your CRM, not just clicks.
  7. Review at four weeks against your success line and your Google and Meta numbers.

FAQs

What is the average CPC for ChatGPT ads? There is no official average. OpenAI says it doesn’t yet have cross-advertiser benchmarks. Published tests report averages of about $3 (Tug, B2B), $4.41 (Common Thread Collective, ecommerce), $9.29 (a B2B test) and $9.89 (Synter, ranging from $5.10 in the UK to $22.89 in New Zealand).

Is $3 to $5 the ChatGPT ads CPC benchmark? No. $3 to $5 is OpenAI’s recommended starting maximum bid for CPC campaigns. It isn’t an average of what advertisers pay, and the auction is relevance-weighted and second-price.

Are ChatGPT ads cheaper than Google Ads? Not reliably. WordStream’s 2026 average Google search CPC is $5.42. Published ChatGPT tests run from about $3 to over $22, and ChatGPT click-through rates are far lower than search, at about 0.73% in the US on Similarweb’s panel against WordStream’s 6.64%.

What CTR do ChatGPT ads get in the UK? Similarweb’s panel puts the all-time UK CTR at 0.74% between 30 March and 16 September 2026, with 45.7% of ad-eligible UK users having seen an ad by September 2026.

Are ChatGPT ads worth it? They can be for brands whose buyers research in long conversations, such as B2B SaaS and high-consideration ecommerce, and that can measure lead quality. Current evidence suggests they work better for consideration than direct response, so run a capped test with your own success line.

What is the minimum budget for ChatGPT ads? OpenAI says the standard US minimum daily budget is $25, and minimums vary by market and currency. A daily budget is an average over a Sunday-to-Saturday week, and one day can spend up to twice that amount.

Do ChatGPT ads convert? There is little public data. The only named CPA comparison is Weight Watchers, whose attributed CPA ran 15.3% below its benchmark according to DoubleVerify, without spend or volumes. Other advertisers have reported poor lead quality.
