How to advertise in Google AI Mode in 2026: eligible campaigns, the UK launch timing and a set-up checklist (Digital Marketing Supermarket)

By Saj Ali · Last updated 31 Oct 2026

You don’t buy Google AI Mode ads as a separate product. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible to show ads inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, through the normal Google Ads auction, with no new campaign or budget needed (Google Ads Help). On 28 October 2026 Google began scaling AI Mode ads in ten more countries and said it plans to add the UK, Brazil and Mexico in Q4 2026 (Google, 28 Oct 2026).

So “advertising in AI Mode” really means setting up your campaigns so they qualify for the longer, conversational questions people ask there. That mostly comes down to match types, bidding, feeds and landing pages. This guide covers what Google has confirmed, what UK advertisers can do before launch, and a step-by-step checklist. For tools that help run Google campaigns, see our round-up of the best AI paid ads tools for 2026.

Key takeaways

  • There’s no AI Mode campaign type. Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns qualify automatically, at the same CPC with no extra charge (Google Ads Help).
  • Ads within AI Mode run in English in the US, Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan (text only), the Philippines and Singapore. Google plans the UK, Brazil and Mexico for Q4 2026, with no exact date.
  • Exact and phrase match only reach AI Mode when the query has direct commercial intent. Broad match, AI Max, Shopping and PMax can also match to the AI answer itself.
  • You can’t target AI Mode on its own or opt out of it. Negative keywords, brand exclusions and asset pinning still apply.
  • Results are mixed into your normal campaign and search terms reports. There’s no separate AI Mode report.
  • Google says AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches, and AI Mode has passed one billion monthly users.

Can you advertise in Google AI Mode?

Yes, but only through your existing campaigns. Google’s help page says advertisers “don’t need to create new campaigns or set up separate budgets”. Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns take part automatically when they’re relevant. Text ads and Shopping ads can appear, and Google is testing local inventory ads and vehicle ads (Google Ads Help).

All ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode are labelled “Sponsored”, and Google says paying for ads doesn’t influence the organic AI answers. Whether your site is cited organically also doesn’t affect your ad eligibility (Google Ads Help). Organic visibility in AI Mode is a separate job, which our guide to AI visibility tools covers.

The audience is large. Google says AI Mode has passed one billion monthly users and AI Overviews has more than 2.5 billion monthly active users (Google, updated 31 Aug 2026).

Where are AI Mode ads available, and when is the UK?

Google’s help page separates two kinds of placement (Google Ads Help):

Placement Where it runs (checked 31 Oct 2026)
Standard ads above or below an AI Overview All 200+ countries and territories, and all languages, where AI Overviews are available
Ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode English only, in the US, Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia (AI Overviews only), Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan (text ads only), the Philippines and Singapore
Planned next Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom in Q4 2026 (Google)

When will AI Mode ads launch in the UK?

Google’s announcement says: “In Q4 2026, we plan to expand to additional locales, including Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.” It doesn’t give a date (Google, 28 Oct 2026). Search Engine Land reported the same timing and noted that Google didn’t share click-through rates for the new markets (Search Engine Land, 28 Oct 2026). Q4 ends on 31 December, so UK advertisers should expect it within the next two months, but treat that as Google’s plan, not a promise.

If your team needs a refresher on the platform first, our guide to Google Ads courses lists training options.

Until then, UK campaigns can already show standard ads above or below AI Overviews. What changes at launch is that your ads become eligible to appear inside AI Mode answers too.

How do ads in AI Mode work?

Google matches ads in AI Mode in one of two ways (Google Ads Help):

  • Query matching. When the search already shows clear commercial intent, such as “pool vacuum cleaners”, Google matches ads to the query as it would on a normal results page.
  • Contextual matching. When someone asks a longer, exploratory question, such as “why is my pool green and how do I clean it?”, Google matches ads to both the question and the AI answer. If the answer mentions brushing and vacuuming, ads for pool vacuums or algae kits can appear.

In some placements, ads also come with an AI explainer: a short piece of text written by Google’s Gemini models that explains how an ad relates to the question. It can use the query, the AI answer and public sources, including your website. You can’t write, edit, approve or opt out of AI explainers, and they aren’t part of your headlines or descriptions (Google Ads Help). That makes the facts on your landing pages more important than ever.

Ads in follow-up questions

On 28 October Google also launched multiturn ads in the US, which let ads appear in follow-up questions within an AI Mode conversation (Google). The help page confirms ads can appear “across follow-up questions in AI Mode” (Google Ads Help).

What Google says about performance

Google says click-through rates are “already similar between sponsored and organic product list items within AI Mode”, based on its own US data from 20 August to 3 September 2026 (Google). That’s Google’s internal figure, it covers product list items only, and it doesn’t give the actual rates. Treat it as a claim to test, not a benchmark.

The commercial context matters too. Alphabet reported third-quarter revenue of $127.6 billion, up 25%, but Search revenue grew 12%, down from 17% in Q2 and 19% in Q1, and its shares fell 8%, according to TechCrunch (TechCrunch, 28 Oct 2026). On the earnings call, Google’s chief business officer Philipp Schindler said: “We are now scaling high-quality ads within AI overviews and AI mode to more users and queries” (TechCrunch). Expect Google to push AI Mode inventory hard.

Which campaigns and match types qualify?

This is the part that decides whether you show up. Here’s what Google says each campaign set-up is eligible for (Google Ads Help):

Campaign or targeting Query matching Contextual matching (query + AI answer)
Search with exact or phrase match Yes, when the query shows direct commercial intent No
Search with broad match Yes Yes
AI Max for Search campaigns Yes Yes
Shopping campaigns Yes Yes
Performance Max Yes Yes

Exact and phrase match only became eligible through a test. Google’s Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin confirmed on 4 September 2026 that the experiment was limited to queries with “explicit and direct user intent”, She added: “AI Max and PMax for Search are designed to capture complex conversational intent and access our latest ad formats (like Highlighted Answers)” (quoted by PPC Land).

In practice, an account built only on tight exact-match keywords will miss most of the long, exploratory questions that make AI Mode different. If you want reach there, you need broad match, AI Max, Shopping or PMax somewhere in the account.

What can and can’t you control?

You can You can’t
Use negative keywords and brand exclusions Target AI Mode or AI Overviews on their own
Pin assets in responsive search ads Opt out of AI Mode or AI Overviews separately from Search
Bid with CPC or conversion-based Smart Bidding Write, edit or switch off AI explainers
See AI Mode activity inside campaign and search terms reports See a separate AI Mode report or segment

Billing is the same as Search. Google says ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode use “the same auction mechanism and cost-per-click (CPC) or conversion-based bidding models”, you aren’t charged extra, and standard invalid traffic protections apply. An ad can show above an AI Overview and inside it on the same search, but not inside it and immediately below it (Google Ads Help).

Because you can’t opt out, your brand safety controls matter more. Keep your negative keyword lists and brand exclusions up to date, and consider a click-fraud tool if you see unusual traffic. Our Fraud Blocker review looks at one option, and the Fraud Blocker listing has its plans.

How to get your campaigns ready: a step-by-step checklist

Google’s own best practice for AI Mode comes down to four areas: AI-powered targeting, Smart Bidding with good conversion data, assets and landing pages that adapt, and complete Merchant Center feeds (Google Ads Help). Here’s how to turn that into a checklist.

  1. Audit your match types. List which campaigns use only exact and phrase match. Pick your best-converting ones and test broad match or AI Max for Search alongside them.
  2. Turn on AI Max for Search (with search term matching). Google names AI Max as one of the set-ups eligible for contextual matching. Start with one campaign and a clear conversion goal.
  3. Fix conversion tracking before you scale. Google pairs AI targeting with conversion- or value-based Smart Bidding “backed by accurate first-party conversion measurement”, through the Google tag or offline conversion imports.
  4. Keep budgets flexible on campaigns that perform. Google says this lets its AI bid across both direct searches and exploratory questions.
  5. Turn on text customisation and final URL expansion in AI Max and Performance Max, so headlines, descriptions and landing pages can adapt to conversational queries. Review the landing pages it picks and exclude any that shouldn’t get paid traffic.
  6. Clean up your Merchant Center feed. Google asks for descriptive titles and descriptions, several high-resolution product and lifestyle images, accurate prices and sale prices, ratings and highlights, and clear shipping and returns policies. Our ecommerce marketing tools category lists feed and catalogue tools.
  7. Make your landing pages answer questions. AI explainers can draw on your website, so put clear, current facts (prices, who it’s for, delivery, returns) in plain text on the page.
  8. Refresh negatives and brand exclusions. Contextual matching widens the questions you can appear for. Check search terms weekly at first and add negatives for anything irrelevant.
  9. Note your launch baseline. For UK accounts, record CTR, CPC, conversion rate and impression share for the four weeks before the UK launch, so you can see what changes afterwards.

How to measure AI Mode ads

Google reports AI Mode and AI Overview activity “in aggregate” inside your standard campaign reports and search terms report, so impressions, clicks, conversions and cost from those placements are mixed with the rest of Search (Google Ads Help). There’s no dedicated AI Mode column.

Until Google adds one, these checks help you spot the effect:

  • Watch search terms for long, question-style queries (eight words or more, or starting with how, why, what or which). Contextual matches will often look like this.
  • Compare performance before and after the UK launch using the baseline from step 9.
  • Run a controlled test: give broad match or AI Max a separate campaign with a fixed budget, and compare cost per conversion with your exact-match campaign.
  • Keep an eye on invalid clicks and lead quality, especially in lead generation. Our guide to AI analytics tools lists tools for joining ad data to CRM outcomes.

What is coming next?

Google announced a run of AI Mode ad formats at Google Marketing Live on 20 May 2026 (Google, 20 May 2026):

  • Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, two new ad types built with Gemini that Google said it was testing.
  • AI-powered Shopping ads and Business Agent for Leads.
  • Direct Offers, a pilot that began in January 2026 with brands including Chewy, Gap and L’Oréal, with promotion bundling, native checkout for Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) merchants, and travel offers from partners such as Booking and Expedia coming soon.

Google also says 75% of people make faster, more confident decisions with AI Mode, which is Google’s own research (Google, 20 May 2026). With UK launch due by the end of the year, the safest plan is to get your match types, conversion tracking and feeds in order now, so your campaigns are eligible on day one.

Advertising inside AI assistants isn’t limited to Google. Our guide to ChatGPT Ads for digital marketers covers OpenAI’s ad platform, which works on context hints rather than keywords.

FAQs

How do I advertise in Google AI Mode? You don’t create a separate campaign. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible to serve ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews. To reach the longer, conversational questions, use broad match, AI Max for Search, Shopping or Performance Max with Smart Bidding and good conversion tracking.

When will Google AI Mode ads launch in the UK? Google said on 28 October 2026 that it plans to expand ads in AI Mode to the UK, Brazil and Mexico in Q4 2026. It hasn’t given an exact date. UK campaigns can already show standard ads above or below AI Overviews.

Do AI Mode ads cost more than normal Google Search ads? No. Google says ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same auction and the same CPC or conversion-based bidding as standard Search ads, and you aren’t charged extra to take part.

Can I opt out of showing ads in AI Mode? No. Google says you can’t target AI Mode or AI Overviews on their own, or opt out of them separately from Search. You can still use negative keywords and brand exclusions to control when your ads show.

Do exact match keywords work in AI Mode? Only for queries with direct commercial intent, such as a product name. Exact and phrase match aren’t eligible for contextual matching on broader exploratory questions, which need broad match, AI Max, Shopping or Performance Max.

What is an AI explainer in Google ads? It’s a short piece of text written by Google’s Gemini models that explains how an ad relates to what someone is looking for. It can use the query, the AI answer and public sources such as your website. Advertisers can’t write, edit, approve or opt out of it.

Can I see AI Mode ad performance separately? Not yet. Google includes AI Mode and AI Overview activity in aggregate in your standard campaign and search terms reports, with no separate AI Mode report.
