Canva Craft review 2026: Canva Craft and Canva Brush AI models compared with Krea for marketing design

Some links on Digital Marketing Supermarket are affiliate links, and some listings and spotlights are sponsored. We may earn a commission or a fee from these at no extra cost to you. Sponsored placements are always labelled, and payment never decides a review score. We use AI tools to help with research and drafting, and an editor checks and edits everything before it’s published.

Yes, for most everyday marketing images, Canva Craft is good enough, especially if your team already designs in Canva. Canva’s first in-house image model ranked #4 on DesignArena’s crowdsourced image leaderboard on 31 October 2026, behind three OpenAI models, and it is included in every Canva plan within the AI allowance. Canva Brush, the design-editing model that followed a week later, is promising but limited to Pro subscribers and doesn’t yet support Brand Kits. If you need many models, video or a generous free allowance, Krea is the more flexible tool.

Last updated 31 October 2026 · By Saj Ali, founder and editor · Based on Canva’s announcements, pricing and help pages, the DesignArena leaderboard and independent tests. We have not tested Craft or Brush hands-on.

Key takeaways

  • Canva Craft launched on 22 October 2026 for all Canva users, in Dream Lab and the Canva Connect API. Canva says an MCP version is coming soon.
  • Craft plans the layout first, then renders images up to 2K in more than 30 aspect ratios, with text in 55 languages (Canva’s figures).
  • On DesignArena it sits at #4 with an Elo of 1341 from 1,303 battles (31 October 2026), behind GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2.
  • Independent tests are mixed: Business Insider preferred ChatGPT or Meta’s Muse in all three of its rounds.
  • Canva Brush launched on 29 October 2026 for Pro users. Canva claims it is up to 69% faster and 46% cheaper per edit than its previous design agent.
  • There is no separate price: Craft and Brush use your plan’s shared AI allowance. Pro is US$144 a year and Business US$250 per person a year.

What are Canva Craft and Canva Brush?

Canva Craft is an image-generation model built by Canva Research, the company’s in-house AI lab. Canva announced it on 22 October 2026 as “our first state-of-the-art image generation model” and says it is “built specifically for design” (Canva newsroom). Canva Brush, announced on 29 October 2026, is a vision-language model that “sees your design, understands how it’s put together, and makes the changes you ask for” (Canva newsroom). In Canva’s words, “Craft generates the image, and Brush refines the design around it.”

How does Canva Craft work?

Craft splits image generation into two stages. First it makes a plan of the image: what goes where, spatial relationships, relative scale, visual hierarchy and any text that needs to appear. Then a separate rendering model turns that plan into an image “at up to 2K resolution across more than 30 aspect ratios” (Canva). Canva says modelling composition and typography before rendering helps with legible text, precise object placement and consistent visuals.

The training is also different from most image models. Canva says Craft’s data “includes millions of human-made templates from Canva’s content library”, including posters, social posts, presentations, infographics and menus, and that professional designers judged more than 25,000 image pairs against leading models during development (Canva). Canva’s EU AI Act summary of training content says the model was trained on more than 1 billion images and more than 10 trillion text tokens, drawing on public datasets such as Common Crawl, images gathered by Canva’s own web crawler between about May and September 2026, and synthetic content Canva training summary.

Canva is also working on two cheaper variants, Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast, “designed to deliver high-quality image generation at a fraction of the cost of leading frontier models” (Canva).

How good is Canva Craft compared with other AI image models?

Good, but not the best. Canva’s headline claim is that Craft makes Canva Research “the world’s second most advanced AI lab for image generation” on DesignArena’s rankings. That is a ranking of labs, not models: as a model, Craft is fourth, and the three above it all come from OpenAI.

1 GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst OpenAI 1415 14,177 71.2% 26.4s
2 GPT-Image-2.5 Flare OpenAI 1387 14,472 68.5% 17.5s
3 GPT Image 2 OpenAI 1362 62,582 71.7% 60.8s
4 Canva Craft Canva 1341 1,303 66.7% (±2.6%) 54.0s
5 Reve 2.1 Reve 1320 43,408 64.5% 76.1s

Source: DesignArena leaderboard. Craft’s score rests on far fewer votes than its rivals, so expect the rank to move. The page’s data also lists Riverflow 2.5 Pro at 1350, just above Craft, although it isn’t shown in the headline chart. Canva says Craft ranks #1 of 87 models for People & Portraits and #1 of 85 for Landscapes & Nature (Canva). eesel AI, reading the category chart in Canva’s post, notes it ranks only #6 of 85 for Marketing Materials and #18 of 87 for Cartoons eesel AI. That is the category most marketers care about, so it’s worth knowing.

What independent tests found

  • The Verge confirmed the #4 ranking and that Craft sits behind three OpenAI models The Verge.
  • Business Insider ran three prompts against ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta’s Muse. Craft “fell short” on a birthday card design (awkward font, no paisley pattern), and ChatGPT won the photo-edit and photorealistic cat rounds, although Craft’s cat had “no components missing or malformed” Business Insider.
  • eesel AI gave it 4/5 and recommends it if you “already build designs in Canva”, but warns that text still needs proofreading eesel AI.

Our read: Craft’s advantage isn’t raw image quality. It’s that the image lands inside the Canva editor, next to your templates and brand assets, so the step from image to finished social post or ad is short.

What is Canva Brush and what can it edit?

Brush powers “supported design edits in Canva AI for Canva Pro subscribers” (Canva). You open a design (or attach or link one in Canva AI), select “Brush” from the dropdown in Canva AI and describe the change. Canva lists examples such as restyling an image and repurposing a design for a new format, such as turning a slide into an Instagram graphic.

  • Speed and cost (Canva’s own figures): “up to 69% faster for general design editing tasks and 46% lower cost per edit task compared to Canva’s previous design agent”.
  • Quality (Canva’s internal testing): Brush “matched or exceeded the quality of our previous setup on most editing tasks”, with the strongest results in restyling and adapting formats.
  • Not there yet: Canva says it is “already working on Brand Kit support, the ability to reference attachments, and improvements to how Brush handles image-heavy layouts”.

Missing Brand Kit support is the big one for marketing teams. Until it arrives, check colours, fonts and logos by hand after every Brush edit.

How much do Canva Craft and Canva Brush cost?

Neither has its own price. Both use the shared AI allowance in your Canva plan. On Canva’s US pricing page (checked 31 October 2026, prices exclude tax) (Canva pricing):

Plan Price AI usage Craft Brush
Free US$0 Limited access to Standard and Premium AI Yes, within limits No
Pro US$144 a year for one person 10x more AI than Free; AI Pass add-on available Yes Yes
Business US$250 a year per person 20x more AI than Free; AI Pass and top-ups available Yes Not yet (“wider availability coming soon”)
Enterprise Contact sales 20x more AI than Free Yes Not yet

Canva says Standard, Premium and Ultra AI tools “share a monthly AI allowance that varies by plan” and that “more advanced AI tools and complex tasks use more allowance”. The AI Pass add-on gives “40x more AI than Canva Pro, and 20x more AI than Canva Business” Canva AI Pass. Canva doesn’t publish per-image costs for Craft, and eesel AI notes that a Free or Pro-trial allowance is small, so a trial is “a thin test” eesel AI.

Can you use Canva Craft images in ads and client work?

Generally yes. Canva’s AI Product Terms say that, as between you and Canva, “you own your Output”, except for output that modifies or incorporates Canva’s licensed content, which is licensed to you instead. You are responsible for making sure your inputs and outputs follow the terms and Canva’s Acceptable Use Policy Canva AI Product Terms. Whether an AI image can be protected by copyright depends on your country. Craft is also covered by Canva Shield, Canva’s AI safety programme with input and output moderation and reporting tools (Canva). On team, enterprise and education accounts, an admin may have turned Dream Lab off, so check your settings first Canva Help. Canva also publishes guidance on using its AI tools safely and legally.

How do you use Canva Craft for marketing design?

  1. Open Dream Lab. Canva says to open it “in the bottom left panel” (Canva). eesel AI’s screenshots show Craft as a model option in the Dream Lab prompt box.
  2. Pick the format first. Choose one of 30+ aspect ratios or enter your own: 1:1 or 4:5 for feed posts, 9:16 for Stories and Reels, 16:9 for YouTube and presentations.
  3. Write a layout-first prompt. Craft plans composition and text before rendering, so say where things go and give the exact words that should appear (see the prompts below).
  4. Add the image to a design and finish it in the editor. Set fonts, logo and colours from your Brand Kit. Don’t rely on the model for the logo.
  5. Use Brush for the edits (Pro). In Canva AI, choose “Brush” in the dropdown and ask for changes like “restyle this for a winter campaign” or “resize this slide as an Instagram post”.
  6. Proofread every word. Check spelling, dates, prices and claims before anything goes live.

Six Canva Craft prompts for marketers

  • Product launch post (4:5): “Clean studio product shot of a matte black wireless speaker on a pale sand background, product centred in the lower two-thirds, large headline at the top reading ‘Sound, simplified’, plenty of empty space top right for a logo.”
  • Event poster (2:3): “Bold poster for a marketing conference, navy background, yellow geometric shapes, headline ‘Growth Summit 2027’ at the top, date line ‘12 March · London’ underneath, no other text.”
  • Story ad (9:16): “Lifestyle photo of a woman in her 30s using a budgeting app on her phone at a kitchen table, morning light, top 15% and bottom 20% of the frame kept clear of faces and objects for text overlays.”
  • Blog header (16:9): “Flat illustration of a marketer analysing a dashboard with charts, soft blue palette, left half empty for a headline.”
  • Localised banner: “Retail sale banner with the headline ‘Soldes d’hiver -30 %’ in large white letters on a red background, snowflake pattern.” Craft can render text in 55 languages, but have a native speaker check it.
  • Seasonal variant set: generate one image, then ask for the same composition “in spring colours”, “in autumn colours” and “at night” to keep a campaign consistent.

Canva Craft vs Krea: which is better for marketers?

They solve different problems. Canva Craft is one model inside a design tool. Krea is a multi-model studio: its pricing page lists its own Krea 3 model alongside GPT Image, Nano Banana, Flux, Ideogram, Seedream and dozens more, plus video models (Veo, Kling, Seedance), upscaling, LoRA training and Krea Agent Krea pricing. Our Krea review covers it in depth.

Prices checked 31 October 2026 on (Canva and Krea. Pick Canva Craft if your bottleneck is getting from idea to finished, on-brand asset. Pick Krea if your bottleneck is image quality or variety and you are happy to finish designs elsewhere. Can developers use Canva Craft through an API?

Yes, with caveats. Craft is available on the Canva Connect API’s image generation endpoint as the model craft_v1_2k. Independent write-ups describe it as a preview API: jobs take about 50 to 60 seconds, run on behalf of a signed-in Canva user with the asset:write scope and spend that user’s AI credits (eesel AI; Oraclip). That suits Canva-connected tools more than standalone apps that need fast, pay-per-image generation.

Who should use Canva Craft and Brush, and who shouldn’t?

Good fit

  • Small marketing teams and solo marketers who already make social posts, ads and decks in Canva.
  • Teams producing lots of variants for social media or paid ads, where the image is one layer of a template.
  • Localised campaigns, given text support in 55 languages (with a human check).

Look elsewhere if

  • You need the best possible image quality. OpenAI’s models still lead DesignArena.
  • You need video ads. See our best AI video generators and our guide to AI UGC ads.
  • You generate at high volume on a small plan, because Craft and Brush share one allowance with every other Canva AI tool.
  • You need strict brand control from Brush today. Brand Kit support isn’t there yet.

Verdict: is Canva Craft good enough for marketing design?

For most day-to-day marketing assets, yes. Craft is a credible first model: #4 on a public leaderboard, strong on photographic images, available on every plan and sitting inside the tool many marketers already use. It isn’t the best image model, its marketing-materials ranking is weaker than its headline, and independent tests still prefer OpenAI for tricky prompts. Brush is the more interesting long-term bet, but wait for Brand Kit support before you trust it with brand work. Our advice: test both on your own templates using your existing allowance before paying for AI Pass or another tool.
